Beyond Borders: The French West Indies – The OECS Gateway to French Sporting Excellence

14/07/2026

The French West Indies sit just beyond our shores, yet for many athletes across the OECS they remain one of the region's greatest untapped opportunities.

France is recognized as one of the world's leading sporting nations, producing Olympic champions, world-class professional athletes, and elite coaches across basketball, football, athletics, handball, rugby, and more. Just a short flight from Dominica, Saint Lucia, Antigua and the rest of the OECS lies a direct connection to that high-performance sporting ecosystem.

In our upcoming feature, we travel Beyond Borders with Waks Basket Club to explore how partnerships between the OECS and the French West Indies can create new pathways for Caribbean athletes, coaches, officials, and clubs.

Could Guadeloupe and Martinique become the bridge between Caribbean talent and opportunities in France and Europe? What can the OECS learn from the French model of athlete development? And how can stronger sporting relationships benefit an entire region?

This feature will examine the competitions, coaching systems, player exchanges, education opportunities, and professional pathways that already exist—and how they can be expanded to help the next generation of OECS student-athletes reach the highest levels.

Coming in the July 31 edition of Student Athlete Focus Magazine.
